During the last year, humanity has witnessed rapid worsening of weather conditions. Although everyone’s wellbeing is at stake, islanders are especially at risk. This is why it was the representative of St. Lucia who spoke out for taking more aggressive measures against climate change. Unfortunately, many other countries believe they already have enough on their plate. These very important discussions all happened during this year’s COP23, also known as the 23rd Conference of the Parties.

The COP is one of the most important events when it comes to the questions of climate change. The focus of this year’s gathering was the Paris agreement. This is a document from 2015 that was signed by almost 200 individual countries. Its purpose was to provide additional motivation for governments to reduce the percentages of greenhouse gas emissions. One of the main goals of the agreement was to give poorer countries the opportunity to catch up with the rest.

Unfortunately, the negotiations were stumped by leaders such as Donald Trump. Namely, the current President of the US doesn’t believe there is such a thing as climate change. That is why the main goal of the American delegation was to advocate for the use of fossil fuel. As a result, the US has backed from carrying out its promises as described in the Paris agreement.

Fortunately, other countries are taking a strong stand for fighting climate change in a more urgent way. For example, Indian Prime Minister Modi has already given a statement in which he promises to make the government work harder on solving the issues in question. Also, those who are fighting climate change aren’t just members of government institutions – it seems that both businesses and individuals are getting ready to join strengths to make a difference.
